Tennis legend Boris Becker has revealed that Rafael Nadal should be given time to decide on his retirement after his 2024 Paris Olympics journey came to an end on Wednesday (July 31). The Spaniard has hinted at a possible retirement from the sport after losing in his doubles match alongside Carlos Alcaraz.
The 37-year-old’s singles campaign ended on Monday (July 29) after losing to Novak Djokovic in the second round. He was banking on his doubles partnership with Alcaraz to win a medal for Spain. The pair won two matches in the doubles to reach the quarterfinals.
Their run came to an end on Wednesday following a 6-2, 6-4 loss to U.S. doubles specialists Austin Krajicek and Rajeev Ram. The defeat leaves Nadal on the edge of retirement after doing everything possible to take part in the Olympics.
After the match, he told journalists that he would need time to think about his next decision while hinting at a possible retirement from the sport. Boris Becker has backed the Spaniard, insisting that the former World No.1 needs all the time he can get because retirement is a personal decision.
It’s a very personal decision. Tennis is his profession, his passion and it is something he has enjoyed doing so successfully for so long. We must give him the time he needs. We are not in his place. He knows he no longer plays at the same level as a few years ago, but he still enjoys competing. We shouldn’t tell him what to do next.

Despite not winning any medal in his final Olympics, Nadal already has two gold medals to his name — one in the singles at Beijing 2008 and another in the doubles in Rio 2016.
Rafael Nadal likely to miss the US Open despite being included in the entry list
Uncertainty about Rafael Nadal’s professional career continues to grow after his doubles loss at the Paris Olympics. The Spaniard looks closer to retiring from the sport than playing another tournament.
Last month, he was part of the entry list for the 2024 US Open with a protected ranking after he didn’t feature in the event last year due to injury. After his Olympic campaign came to an end on Wednesday, Nadal, who won the US Open four times (2010, 2013, 2017, and 2019), admitted that he may not take part in the season’s final Grand Slam.
It seems not, but I will let you know soon. Right now, I can’t give you a clear answer, I need some time, but it seems difficult to me.

The 36-year-old has competed in only one Grand Slam this year, missing the Australian Open and Wimbledon. At the French Open, he made an early exit after losing to Alexander Zverev in the first round.
