After Roger Federer retired in 2022 and Rafael Nadal in and out of action due to injuries, the burden of keeping the show going fell on Novak Djokovic‘s shoulders. The Serbian did a great job as he claimed three of the four Grand Slam titles in 2023. However, Djokovic too felt the age catching up to him as the 37-year-old stayed out of action for quite a few tournaments.

With the Big 3 out of the picture, there were fears about a decline in interest in tennis. But none of it happened. The transition took place and for the first time in 22 years, none of the Big 3 was among the winners of the Grand Slam events.

Carlos Alcaraz (Roland Garros and Wimbledon) and Jannik Sinner (Australian Open and US Open) shared the four Grand Slam titles between them. Meanwhile, the Laver Cup also saw a spike in interest with Team Europe claiming the title in thrilling fashion on the back of Alcaraz’s heroics.

Seeing this development, Boris Becker, who was in Berlin for the tournament, feels that despite the Big 3 out of the picture, tennis is currently experiencing a boom with more and more people taking an interest in the sport. Becker also flagged the need to hold more tournaments like the Laver Cup.

We are currently experiencing a tennis boom internationally and in Germany, too, many people are watching more tennis than before. So it's important to have tournaments like the Laver Cup, where the best in the world play.
Boris Becker said to Tennis.com.

Notably, it was for the first time that Team Europe won the title at the Laver Cup without any of the Big Three players on the team.

Becker said it was tough to pick only three. However, since he had no choice, the former player and coach picked the top three players in the world- Jannik Sinner, Alexander Zverev, and Carlos Alcaraz.

Three is not enough. But I would choose the three best: in this case, that would be Alcaraz, Sinner and Zverev. Two of them are in Berlin.
Boris Becker said about his dream team for Laver Cup

Becker’s dream might come true in the next editions. The Laver Cup was hosted in Germany for the first time ever with local star Alexander Zverev featuring for Team Europe. Alcaraz also made his debut, and the CEO hopes to get Sinner on board for the next editions.
