After the New York Knicks beat the Philadelphia 76ers in Game 1 of the 2024 NBA Playoffs, chants of âF*** Trae Young!â rang out in the streets of the city. One would be forgiven for thinking Young plays for the 76ers, but thatâs not the case. In fact, he has played all his six seasons in the league for the Atlanta Hawks! However, the chants have continued and a similar incident early this year has prompted him to talk about it recently.
In an interview on Paul Georgeâs Podcast P, the 25-year-old was asked if he still finds the chants by Knicks fans hilarious. To which he responded, recalling the time a young girl among the fans even joined in.
Oh, super funny, that sh** is hilarious. I'll never forget like this young little girl, if I had to guess, maybe 10 to 12. Like just giving me the finger, like right behind the scorer's table and I'm looking at her dad, like I don't say nothing to her. I just look at the dad and I'm like, that's cool?Trae Young said
As stated by Young, the sight of that young girl giving him the middle finger is a scene that hasnât really left his head. He further recalled staring at the father and likely expecting the man to stop his daughter from pointing the finger. Nonetheless, the way Trae Young sees it now, the whole experience is rather funny to him.
It could be that he has since grown thick skin towards the constant chants by Knicks fans. Or that he is just focused on the game and isnât bothered by what people shout at him from the stands. Whatever the case, it appears the Atlanta Hawks star has simply stopped taking offence on that basis and moved on like itâs nothing.
Trae Young vs. Knicks chants explained
The real reason fans of the New York Knicks arenât particularly fond of Trae Young actually goes back to the 2021 NBA Playoffs. Back then, the Hawks and Knicks were drawn against each other, with the 3-time All-Star leading the Hawks to a series win in five games.
In Game 1, Young started the series strong, going on to rack 32 points and 10 assists. In Game 2 however, he received the first-ever âF*** Trae Youngâ chants which amused him at the time.
But it was in Game 5 that those chants got louder and became synonymous with Knicks fans. Young took the Hawks to victory with 36 points in the final matchup at the Knicks home ground. As if that was not enough, he then bowed to the crowd at Madison Square Garden after scoring a three-pointer in the last minute. Since then, the New York Knicks fans have not forgiven him.
