It is no secret that the WNBA is on its way in outpacing its parent organization, the NBA, in terms of popularity. Thanks to the likes of Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese, the tide is starting to turn. This has also sparked interest in new franchises, something Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum wants too.

The NBA Champion recently signed the most lucrative contract in basketball history and also has multiple endorsements to his name. Having that flow of funds opened the doors for him to join an ownership group which the likes of billionaires Richard Chaifetz and David Hoffman are also a part.

This ownership group, as per Sportico, are looking to bid for a WNBA franchise in their hometown of St. Louis, Missouri. This has come about after the new CBA allowed active NBA players to own up to 4% stake in WNBA franchises.

So far, LeBron James and Stephen Curry have voiced their interest in investing in the league. But the first to declare his interest is Jayson Tatum. The women’s league has opened up for expansion and has already signed on three new teams.

The first of which, the Golden State Valkyries, will start playing next season. The other two unnamed teams from Portland and Toronto will start operations in 2026. But the league is still open to keep adding teams—which is where Tatum and the $200 million bid come in.

With the growing popularity of the sport, and the much lower entry costs than the NBA has made it a lucrative prospect. But NBA players would also know that efforts from one of their own ended up in heartbreak. But with the right people, it should be possible for a few of these multi-millionaires to become owners.

While some WNBA teams have affiliates in the NBA, not all teams have the luxury of collaborating with their big brothers. If Jayson Tatum were to start a team in St. Louis, they will benefit from a local fanbase. But what if he moved to a much bigger city, that too almost becoming an affiliate of the very team he plays for. That is the proposal Connecticut Sun star DiJonai Carrington wrote.

What about a bid to move a team to Boston??

With this quote, she is not proposing Jayson Tatum to start a new team beside his Boston Celtics. Rather bid to take over ownership of her Connecticut Sun and move them to Boston. That would bring significantly larger revenue streams for the team and help Tatum’s stake grow significantly over the years.

She wrote this out of frustration as the management is making a mockery out of the team. For instance, during their second-round playoffs, the owners leased out half their practice court for a birthday party. If Tatum can fuel a takeover, they could move the team to Boston and enjoy double the fan base.
