Boston Celtics awarding Jayson Tatum record-breaking 5-year $315 million contract has fans breaking the internet

Last year the Boston Celtics made Jaylen Brown the highest-paid player in NBA history. That record-setting contract was unreal for the time. But the most important question being asked was what his partner in crime Jayson Tatum would get in the following season. Now the question has been answered. The NBA champion becomes the new highest-paid player in history with a record-setting $315 million contract. However, fans have been breaking the internet since the news broke.

Insider Chris Haynes reported that Jayson Tatum has signed a 5-year Super Max extension worth $315 million. That averages to $63 million per year. An astronomical amount considering up until a few years back, breaking past $40 million was seen as a milestone. However, the Boston Celtics wasted no time when tying down one of their 2 most important players this off-season. They have made it clear that they want Tatum and Brown to lead the way for the foreseeable future.

Along with the deals of Jaylen Brown, Derrick White, Jrue Holiday, and the existing deal of Kristaps Porzingis, the Boston Celtics have committed more than $215 million to their starting lineup alone per season. That itself puts them way above the 2nd Apron. Meaning, the Celtics will be paying the largest luxury tax bill to the NBA for some time.

This means the Boston Celtics are going all-in, in their quest to win a few more NBA titles. No other team has this much money allocated to their starting core. However, many fans cannot see the logic of this deal.

Basketball fans have had varied opinions since the news broke early in the day. Some feel that the Boston Celtics have done the right thing by extending him to a Super Max contract. Others feel he does not deserve this contract considering he was not even the best player in the playoffs. However, one has to understand that this is not just because of one set of playoffs.

Jayson Tatum’s performances over the past couple of years have squarely put him up as the leader of the Boston Celtics. However, fans are still not convinced. Check out some of their opinions on social media listed below:

Jayson Tatum has now officially broken the $300 million barrier. But he certainly will not be the last considering how the new TV rights deals will impact future salary caps. However, Tatum has deservedly won the largest deal in NBA history after taking the Celtics to their record-setting 18th NBA title.
