Ever since the conclusion of last season, Tee Higgins has been in a contract stand-off with the Cincinnati Bengals. Their reluctance to match his salary demands has now reached a stage where the superstar wideout is now throwing shade at his team.
The superstar wideout shared a post on his official Instagram account. The caption was what grabbed everyone’s attention.
I tell em no, they can’t wait to call me selfish…Tee Higgins wrote
This was a direct shot at the Cincinnati Bengals as he expects them to call him selfish after a certain point. He showed them that not only is he working out to stay in shape, but also enjoying his life. Tee Higgins and the Bengals have until July 15th to reach any new agreement.
Post that, he will have to play under the franchise tag they placed on him in February. But he has made it clear that he might not play for them this season if no deal is in place. The contract impasse has put the spotlight on the Bengals and their age-old reputation for not paying over the odds.
However, Higgins is a crucial piece to their offense. He posted back-to-back 1000 receiving-yard seasons before injuries limited him last season. After initially putting in a trade request, he withdrew it but has maintained his stance that he may not play.
Tee Higgins’ unavailability could impact Joe Burrow and Bengals’ offense
If Tee Higgins does decide to sit out, it could impact the Cincinnati Bengals and their quest to contend for a Super Bowl. After an injury-strewn season, the Bengals finally have Joe Burrow healthy at the quarterback spot. If he stays healthy, he will need Higgins to line up opposite Ja’Marr Chase if they are to terrorize opposition defenses.
The Bengals have added significant upgrades to their offensive line after struggling with it for the past few years. They have also added pieces to overcome their losses in defense. More importantly, they have one of the easiest schedules of all teams this season. Allowing them to integrate their new pieces in time for the playoffs.
But if Tee Higgins does not play, all these efforts will take a significant knock, as they do not have a capable alternative in their ranks. They do not want to waste another season of Joe Burrow and Ja’Marr Chase’s talents. They want that Super Bowl.
