Jonathon Cooper did a number on the Cleveland Browns quarterback, Jameis Winston, on Monday. The Denver Broncos pass rusher had to justify his $15 million-a-year contract, which he signed less than a month ago.

To put a leash on Winston’s swashbuckling style of play, the Broncos applied pressure on him whenever the opportunity presented itself. They forced three sacks, three turnovers, and two pick-sixes on the night.

However, one of the hits almost knocked Winston out. At the start of the fourth quarter, Broncos linebacker Nik Bonitto initiated a sack on the 30-year-old signal caller. When Winston was on his way down, Jonathon Cooper (wearing No. 0) rammed into his helmet.

The impact of the tackle rocked Winston’s head back and forth before he hit the turf. If the helmet wasn’t protecting his face and head, then the Broncos would be short of another quarterback. Interestingly, the referee let Cooper go and even awarded him a share of Bonitto’s sack.

Football fans on social media were very unhappy with how the officials handled the situation. They pointed out that if Cooper had tackled the reigning Super Bowl champion Patrick Mahomes (Kansas City Chiefs) instead of Winston, then they wouldn’t have let the Broncos edge rusher off the hook so easily.

Winston recorded a career night—almost. The two pick-sixes changed the tide of the game. Regardless of the turnovers, the Pro Bowler threw for 497 yards and 4 touchdowns. It was his fifth 400+ yards game.

Besides his individual numbers, Winston also helped wide receiver Jerry Jeudy lodge 235 yards and a 70-yard touchdown. Since taking over quarterback duty, the combination of Winston and Jeudy added 30 catches for 546 yards for the Browns.

I know I’m better than this. Like, I’m just praying for the Lord to deliver me from pick-sixes… The defense played good. Offense played well. I didn’t do a great job.

Jameis Winston said during the post-game press conference

In 10 games this year, Winston has 1763 yards, 11 touchdowns, and 7 interceptions, along with one rushing touchdown while taking 16 sacks. The loss left the Browns with a 3-9 record. Next, Winston will play against the Pittsburgh Steelers, whom he beat 19-24 just a week ago.
