Nick Foles’ era in the NFL has finally come to an end as the Philadelphia Eagles quarterback has decided to officially retire after eleven years of playing football. But he wants to do it in style and that’s why he has picked the opening game of the coming season to do so.
Foles earned prominence in the league when he snatched away the Super Bowl ring from the seven-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady after leading the Eagles to Super Bowl LII victory. Foles holds a special position in Philly’s legacy as he brought them their first and only Vince Lombardi trophy. And that’s why they announced that the veteran quarterback will retire in the season opener on August 16.
I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to retire as a Philadelphia Eagle. The City of Brotherly Love has always felt like home to me as an NFL player. Philadelphia is a city I truly love, and it has been an honor to wear the Eagles jersey. Thank you, Philadelphia, for embracing me and making me a part of your family forever. Your love and support have meant the world. Fly, Eagles, Fly.Nick Foles said via the Eagles’ official statement
Although leaving his 11-year veteran career is not an easy thing, Foles is looking forward to the next chapter of his life, which he most wants to spend with his family.
Nick Foles’ journey in NFL has been of extreme highs and lows
Foles’ journey with Philadelphia hasn’t been on a straight route and comprises many twists and turns. After being drafted in the third round of the 2012 NFL Draft, Foles only played three seasons before he was traded to the Los Angeles Rams in 2015. From there, he also moved on to the Kansas City Chiefs to serve as a backup, but eventually returned to Philly in 2017 and led them straight to the Super Bowl victory.
Despite his dream run in 2017, Foles opted out of his contract to join the Jacksonville Jaguars for a year. After brief stints with the Jaguars and the Chicago Bears, he moved to the Indianapolis Colts in 2022. Unsigned in 2023, Foles decided to retire as an Eagle during the 2024 season opener.
Nick Foles always carried himself with the utmost class and integrity, demonstrating through his actions, both on and off the field, what it meant to be a Philadelphia Eagle. The franchise CEO and chairman Jeffrey Lurie said while showering high praise at the Super Bowl champion
In the Super Bowl game of the 2017-18 season, Foles also earned the Super Bowl MVP honor by throwing three touchdowns against Brady’s New England Patriots. He is also one of the first two players to record both passing and receiving touchdowns in Super Bowl history, and remains the all-time leader for most passing yards (471) in a single game in Philly’s history.
