Injuries have hit the Detroit Lions hard, but losing David Montgomery may prove to be the toughest for the NFC North leaders. The star running back is among the top scrimmage makers this year.

Montgomery was part of the Lions team that lost 48-42 against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday. A guy who averaged 15 carries a game this year only managed six against the Bills. The Lions switched to passing play to counter the Bills’ running defense, so it may have contributed to low carries.

However, the story is different. Montgomery picked up an injury somewhere along the day, leaving Jahmyr Gibbs with the running back duty. After the game, the Lions’ revealed that the 27-year-old Montgomery suffered an MCL injury.

ESPN’s Dan Orlovsky claimed it’s a massive blow for the Lions.

They lose their closer. They lose their guy that brings the identity to their football team.

The former Lions QB knows that Detroit still has players like WR Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams, and TE Sam LaPorta, but Montgomery brought the trademark Lions energy into the game.

You know as a defender, you gotta bring your pads, every single time you tackle him… so, just the identity element part of his game is a loss for this team. I think the offense can survive, but that is a loss.

David Montgomery will undergo season-ending surgery

Not only is Montgomery out for the season, but he also has to undergo surgery to fix a torn MCL in his knee. ESPN’s Adam Schefter shared the news on X.

Head coach Dan Campbell seemed distressed by the sudden unavailability of one of his star players but praised him for playing an entire game with the injury.

David’s so tough. He continued to play through and then got it checked out today, and we realized that’s what that was. He’s just the ultimate teammate. The ultimate competitor. We’re gonna miss him.

Dan Campbell said as per USA Today

Prior to the injury, Montgomery logged 775 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns on 185 carries and 341 receiving yards on 36 catches in 14 games. He has appeared in a total of 88 games, rushed 1319 times for 5399 yards and 51 touchdowns, along with 207 receptions for 1698 yards and 4 touchdowns.
