Saquon Barkley has surpassed 2000 rushing yards for the first time in his career and also becomes part of an elite list of players to do so. The Philadelphia Eagles star running back has one game left to try and beat the all-time rushing record. Ironically, that game is against his former team, the New York Giants.

This will not be the first time the 27-year-old has faced his former team this season. In week 6 of his first season with the Eagles, the star running back ran for 176 yards and scored one touchdown averaging over 10 yards per carry.

He will need 101 yards to break the great Eric Dickerson‘s all-time record of 2105 yards. The Hall of Famer himself though is not happy with the prospect of Barkley breaking his record. However, another Hall of Famer Shannon Sharpe felt otherwise.

It’s against the Giants, a team that ‘y’all played in my face, I’m going to try to get 200 in the first quarter’. Saquon got to play, he got to get this. Saquon go break this record.

Shannon Sharpe on First Take

The three-time Super Bowl champion added that when he has the opportunity, Saquon Barkley should go out to break the record. Especially as it is against his former team whose GM Joe Schoen had no interest to resign him. Sharpe believes the Eagles should not rest him unless he gets the record.

Saquon Barkley has best offensive line to lean on for attempt at record

The Philadelphia Eagles pride on their offensive and defensive lines. They follow the principal of starting with the trenches and building from there. That principal has seen them have one of the best O-lines in the league despite the retirement of All-Pro center Jason Kelce.

That offensive line should help Saquon Barkley break the record with ease. The last time Barkley faced the New York Giants, his former teammate Dexter Lawrence was still playing. But now, the behemoth run wrecker is recovering at home, leaving a bigger than usual hole.

If the Eagles can draw up plays to help their star running back get loose early on, he could go on to break Dickerson’s record. As Shannon Sharpe said, he would also be motivated based on how his former team and particularly Joe Schoen let him go.

Sharpe’s ESPN colleague Rex Ryan suggested that the Eagles should rest Barkley and focus on the playoffs. The team also do not have much to play for against one of the worst teams in the league. But even then, the star running back might not get another opportunity in his career.
