The Washington Commanders host the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday night at the Northwest Stadium, Landover, Maryland looking forward to clinching a playoff spot. The Commanders last made the postseason in 2020 where they lost the Wild Card playoff game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. However, their last postseason win dates even more back – a Wild Card playoff against the Buccaneers in 2005.

The Commanders have defeated the Falcons in their last three games. In NFL history, they have met twenty-nine times including one postseason game. They have won eighteen times in those 29 outings. The Commanders vs. Falcons game will also see two rookies facing off each other again in the season – Jayden Daniels and Micheal Penix Jr.

The Atlanta Falcons’ season hinges on winning the NFC South; otherwise, they’ll be watching from home by the second week of January. While there’s a slim chance they could sneak into the wildcard race if Washington loses back-to-back games and the Falcons win out, securing the division title by winning their remaining games would render the Commanders’ final-week outcome irrelevant.

Why can the Washington Commanders win?

The refurbished Washington Commanders hold a clear advantage heading into Sunday’s game, bolstered by their consistent performance and strategic edge. Their offense, led by a dynamic quarterback and a reliable receiving corps, has demonstrated the ability to exploit defenses with both precision and explosiveness.

Jayden Daniels is one of the top names in consideration for the Rookie of the Year trophy. Daniels and Denver Broncos’ Bo Nix are the two strong opponents to finis with the accolade. Over 15 games, Daniels has completed 69% of his passes, accumulating 3,303 yards and 22 passing touchdowns. Additionally, he leads the team in rushing with 737 yards and six rushing touchdowns.

Additionally, the Commanders’ coaching staff has shown adaptability, crafting game plans that capitalize on opponents’ weaknesses while maximizing their own strengths. The team’s recent momentum, coupled with a strong home-field advantage, further tilts the odds in their favor.

Washington’s balanced approach and well-rounded roster position them as the favorites to secure a victory on Sunday.

Why the Atlanta Falcons can win?

Drake London (Image via AP)

The Atlanta Falcons are back into their complete offensive unit on Sunday. Despite receiver Drake London appearing on the injury report earlier in the week due to a knee issue, he reassured reporters on Thursday that it wouldn’t affect his availability, a claim supported by the team’s decision not to assign him a game designation on Friday.

In addition, the Falcons cleared receiver Casey Washington from concussion protocol and KhaDarel Hodge from a lingering ribs injury.

The Falcons are coming off a much needed win against the Giants. The win has bolstered the hope in the team especially in Michael Penix Jr. who marked his first game as a starter. He is expected to shine similarly in the next game as well, which could mean a Falcons’ win.
