Gianmarco Tamberi lost his wedding ring at the Olympics opening ceremony. He was Italy’s flag-bearer during the event. Unfortunately for the athlete, the ring slid off his finger and into the Seine River. Following the incident, Tamberi apologized to his wife Chiara Bontempi on Instagram.
In his apology note, Tamberi proposed rekindling their vows. He suggested that Chiara throw her ring into the river, so their wedding rings would stay together forever in a poetic way.
It will stay forever in the riverbed of the city of love, flown away while I tried to carry the Italian tricolor as high as possible during the opening ceremony of the most important sport evening in the world. ... I think there might be a huge poetic side to yesterday’s misdeed, and if you want, we’ll throw yours into that river, too, so they’ll be together forever, and we’ll have one more excuse to, like you’ve always asked, renew our vows and get married anew.Gianmarco Tamberi wrote on Instagram (translated from Italian)
He believed this gesture would bring him success in the upcoming high jump competition and that would Chiara love the idea and find it romantic.
The opening ceremony for the Paris 2024 Olympics took place on July 26. The parade began at Austerlitz Bridge and finished at the Trocadéro. Over 300,000 spectators watched from the riverbanks. During the procession, performers marched alongside the athletes.
It officially started the 16 days of competition. The Games will feature 10,672 athletes from 206 nations this year.
Gianmarco Tamberi will be vying second Olympic gold in Paris
Gianmarco Tamberi won his first gold for Italy at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics high jump event. He won the medal tied to Qatar’s Mutaz Barshim. Tamberi is favored to defend his championship in Paris beginning August 7.
Earlier in June, Tamberi recorded the biggest leap of the year (2.37m) when he won his third consecutive European title in Rome.
However, he sustained a thigh injury just weeks after, but he did not allow the injury to get to his head. The Italian remains focused to claim his second Olympic medal by defending his title, a feat that has not been achieved in the high jump event of the Games.
