‘Candid’ Draymond Green admits he ‘almost’ signed with Memphis last year

Draymond Green shares a candid following Klay Thompson's departure

Amidst the unfolding free agency and the departures of Klay Thompson and Chris Paul from the Warriors, Draymond Green recently revealed on his show that he almost left the Warriors to sign with the Memphis Grizzlies last year.

Draymond Green shared a story about a time he called Klay Thompson, Stephen Curry, and coach Steve Kerr separately to tell them he was considering moving to Memphis.

I called Klay, Steph separate calls and Steve and I was just telling them like ‘yo I’m leaving I’m going to Memphis.
Draymond Green said

He mentioned that Klay later called him about his free agency, and Green’s wife reminded him of when they were in Paris last year and he made those calls about Memphis. Eventually, Green and his family worked things out with the Warriors, and he decided to stay with the team.

Draymond Green then expressed his hope that Klay Thompson appreciates everything the Golden State Warriors organization has done. He also mentioned that he wants Klay to be himself with the Dallas Mavericks. Green expressed his gratitude towards Klay for all they have accomplished together.

He then credited his settlement to stay with the Warriors to General Manager Mike Dunleavy as he played a major role in the decision. He also said that all great things must come to an end and so did Klay Thompson’s journey with the Warriors.

Warriors are now in ‘minus’ with Klay Thomspon leaving for Dallas

Following his free agency, Klay Thompson was approached by both the Lakers and the Mavericks. The Lakers made a strong pitch, involving Klay and his father, to join their team. However, Klay ultimately viewed the Dallas Mavericks as a better option. The presence of Luca Doncic and Kyrie Irving, coming off an NBA Finals run, influenced Klay’s decision to choose Dallas over Los Angeles, as reported by Wojnarowski.

With Klay Thompson leaving the Warriors to join the Dallas Mavericks the Warriors lineup is now minus one with one of their historic players.
Adrian Wojnarowski wrote

Klay was offered a $48M 2-year deal to resign with the Warriors but he still chose a $50M 3-year deal with the Mavericks.

Wojnarowski suggested that Klay Thompson had the opportunity to consider several 4-year contract offers, potentially with more money. He highlighted that Texas’s lack of state income tax and the appeal of living in Dallas, coupled with the prospect of playing alongside stars like Luca Doncic and Kyrie Irving, likely swayed Klay’s decision. However, Wojnarowski also pointed out that leaving the Warriors has deprived them of a significant historical player in their lineup.
