As 2025 fast approaches, it is time to look back at the year WWE had. The promotion broke several gate records and earned profits while the on-screen product continued to be strong. As always, the in-ring work played a major role in a successful 2024 for WWE. In addition to the monthly PLEs, the company had a surprisingly strong match catalog on television.

In fact, some might argue that WWE’s weekly shows have gained more prominence than the major events. Nonetheless, fans welcomed the change and preference to add major matches to TV. From world title bouts to tournament qualifiers, there were several high-stakes battles that took place on both Raw and SmackDown.

5) AJ Styles vs. Kevin Owens vs. Rey Mysterio (April 12, SmackDown)

Triple H doesn’t shy away from showcasing his love for triple-threat matches. A lot of three-way bouts took place on PLEs and television this year, some of them coming during tournaments and qualifiers. Without a doubt, one of the best ones took place on the April 12 edition of SmackDown. The veteran trio of AJ Styles, Kevin Owens, and Rey Mysterio fought in a #1 contender qualifier for the Undisputed WWE Title.

As expected, the trio delivered in the main event of the show. Furthermore, the match was filled with creative spots. The closing stretch saw The Phenomenal One deliver a top rope Styles Clash on Mysterio onto Owens to pick up the win. Styles went on to subsequently win the qualifiers, facing Cody Rhodes in another MOTY candidate at Backlash.

4) Andrade vs. Carmelo Hayes VI (September 27, SmackDown)

The seven-match series between Andrade and Carmelo Hayes was one of the best features of WWE television this year. Hence, it deserves a spot on this list. Among their enthralling bouts, it is the sixth match that finds itself here. With Andrade 3-2 up against Hayes and a future US Title shot looming ahead for both men, the stakes were higher than in their previous matches.

After yet another close back-and-forth encounter, it was the then-United States Champion LA Knight who played a major factor in the end. Earlier in the night, Hayes attacked Knight backstage. As such, The Megastar made a beeline to the ring and inadvertently cost Andrade as Hayes rolled him up to make it 3-3.

3) GUNTHER vs. Sami Zayn (October 7, Raw)

In one of the best rivalries of the year, Gunther and Sami Zayn went head-to-head on two occasions. Their first encounter saw Zayn dethroning Gunther and ending his 666-day Intercontinental Championship reign. Therefore, when Gunther won the World Heavyweight Title, Zayn felt he was owed a shot at it. However, for weeks, The Ring General denied the offer until Zayn finally got under his skin and made him accept.

The second match took place in the main event of the October 7 episode of Raw. Gunther ensured that he wouldn’t make the same mistakes as he did at WrestleMania, as the rivals tore the house down yet again. During the closing minutes, the former Bloodline member kicked out of a powerbomb at one. Despite the shocking twist, Gunther immediately choked his opponent out and successfully retained the World Heavyweight Championship.

2) Bianca Belair vs. IYO SKY (September 16, Raw)

Speaking of rivals with incredible chemistry, Bianca Belair and Iyo Sky have always delivered in their head-to-head encounters. Two of the best women’s wrestlers in their world reignited their feud in September. Belair and Sky squared off on the September 16 edition of Raw. Within two minutes, the two stars had the crowd standing on their feet.

Throughout the bout, Sky and Belair traded back-and-forth blows, showcasing their athleticism and strength. Belair thought she had the match won, holding Sky in position for the KOD. However, the latter swiftly countered the finisher into a roll-up to pick up the shock win. As she pinned the Women’s Tag Team Champion, Sky and Kairi Sane received an opportunity at the titles.

1) GUNTHER vs. Sheamus (May 6, Raw)

Without a doubt, the strongest period of television for WWE this year was the King and Queen of the Ring month. The likes of Iyo Sky, Bianca Belair, Randy Orton, and Lyra Valkyria showcased their in-ring abilities. Among all the fascinating matches that took place throughout the tournament, it was the first-round match between Gunther and Sheamus that was the most physical.

Similar to Sky and Belair, the two stars have a fight-forever rivalry that always brings out the best in them. Unfortunately for Sheamus, this has always been a one-sided feud. It didn’t change on this night as well, with Gunther emerging victorious for the third time. Gunther subsequently went on to win the tournament. Meanwhile, Sheamus’ streak of TV matches continued throughout the year, with enthralling bouts against the likes of Pete Dunne and Ludwig Kaiser.
