The Cincinnati Masters are underway and the top seeds of the tournament are set to begin their first match of the tournament. With the first half of the draw almost done with their opening matches, the bottom half is yet to begin theirs.
There are already a few heavyweight matches in the mix. Up front is the clash between Carlos Alcaraz and Gael Monfils. This will be their third outing of the season. Before this year, they never faced each other even once, but this will be their third Masters event, where they play each other in the opening rounds. Carlos Alcaraz and Monfils played both close matches that got the audience worked up with the Spaniard emerging victorious both times.
Their last match was at the Miami Masters, with Alcaraz cruising past the Frenchman in the first set and then had to stop a comeback to win the match 6-2,6-4. This will be their next match and anything is expected from the match. Both the players are doing well this season and are in form to give the audience another banger of a match. Alcaraz has been the best player on the tour this season with Jannik Sinner.
The Spaniard has won two Grand Slam titles this season- French Open and Wimbledon. While this is the first tournament for Alcaraz after the Paris Olympics loss, Gael Monfils enters in after losing out early at the Canadian Open. However, he started great this tournament beating the in-form Alexei Popyrin in straight sets. In the end, nothing less than a straight-set victory for Alcaraz is expected, as all the predictions favor him.
However, there are a couple of factors that may change the outcome of the match. Even though Alcaraz is in great touch, he will have to deal with the change of surfaces, which gives Monfils an edge over his opponent.
Moreover, the last time Alcaraz lost to Novak Djokovic in an all-important final, his gameplay was ruined for the rest of the season. It happened last year in Cincinnati and once again the Spaniard lost to Djokovic in the final of the Olympics. There is no guarantee that the loss will still haunt him, but might play on his head, which could change the outcome of the match.
