Coco Gauff recently acknowledged that she has achieved a lot at a young age and intends to keep moving forward in her career. At 20, she has a Grand Slam to her name, is a strong contender for the WTA World No. 1 ranking, and recently was a flag-bearer for the USA at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
She has been making the headlines very early in her career. At the age of 15, Gauff reached the fourth round of Wimbledon. She is also a former French Open finalist and has seven WTA titles to her name.
However, despite all the achievements, the American is going through a rough patch currently. She lost to Emma Navarro at the Wimbledon, followed by a tough loss at the Paris Olympics to Donna Vekic. Her Canadian Open campaign also did not go well.
Even though Gauff herself had no expectations, she lost only in the second round to Diana Shnaider. Ahead of her run at the Cincinnati Open, Gauff said that she has a long career ahead of her and that she is in no hurry to win titles.
I’m 20 years old and I still have a long way to go. Most of my opponents in the top 10 are 24 and up, except for [Iga] Swiatek. I have time. I want to win now because I’m used to winning so early, but I think I can take a step back and realize that I have at least 10 years left in this sport.Coco Gauff told press in Cincinnati
Her main rival currently is Iga Swiatek, who is just a couple of years older than her. Most of the other top players on the women’s circuit are much older than her.
Coco Gauff emphasizes on importance of her US Open win last year
At the age of 19, Coco Gauff became one of the youngest American to win the US Open. It was an emotional moment for the youngster who got that big break she was looking for. Despite not having a memorable season till then, she pulled off a miracle at the US Open.
Heading into the US Open, the 20-year-old has not been in the best of forms this year either. She will be hoping to get some momentum in Cincinnati before heading to Flushing Meadows for her title defense.
I won the US Open and I still just didn't feel it. It took me a week to actually believe that it had happened. I had found myself like crying or sometimes, not like sadness but like disbelief. I wanted to win a Grand Slam as a teenager so I felt that the clock was just ticking. Yeah I just didn't expect it.Coco Gauff said (via Baker Tilly US)
After getting a bye in the first round, She is set to face Yulia Putintseva in the second round in Cincinnati. With the US Open on the horizon, all eyes will be on the American and her form.
