Iga Swiatek has become a dominant force since climbing to the No. 1 position after Ashleigh Barty’s shocking retirement from tennis. The Polish star now reveals the reason behind her success after becoming the first woman since Serena Williams to win the Madrid Open and Rome titles.
She also won the Doha title and the Indian Wells Masters, making it three Masters heading into the French Open, for which she is a defending champion.
However, for all her great games on the court, Swiatek would never have become No. 1 in March 2022 if Barty hadn’t retired. In fact, before Barty retired, she played Swiatek twice, winning the 2021 Madrid Open and the 2022 Adelaide.
After winning the 2022 Australian Open, Barty announced her retirement from the sport. Swiatek, then No. 2, was on an unprecedented 12-match winning streak and needed to beat Viktorija Golubic 6-2, 6-0 in Miami to go over to No. 1.
Last year, Swiatek faced heavy competition from Aryna Sabalenka and eventually lost her position after the US Open but reclaimed it in less than two months. She has finally revealed that focusing on her career has driven her to more success in the last year.
While you’re on this journey, striving for excellence, you can sometimes say, “Okay, that’s enough.” You’re in control, the whole way. No one else is driving the car. And sometimes the best solution is not giving a sh*t, honestly.Iga Swiatek said
Meanwhile, Swiatek is hoping to win more titles, having won four already. She will head into the French Open as a clear favorite to defend the title.
I am sorry to curse, but if there is some secret to my success in the last year, it’s giving myself that freedom to not care what people think. That’s what led me to winning another Grand Slam and the third one. That’s what led me to No. 1. Letting go.Swiatek further added
Iga Swiatek earns highest ranking of points after claiming two consecutive WTA Masters title
Iga Swiatek is aiming for more achievement, heading to Roland Garros as the defending champion. But she took her career to new heights after winning two consecutive WTA Masters titles.
She now has the most ranking points with 11,695. Only Serena Williams had more ranking points than her—12,721—during the two weeks of the 2015 US Open (August 31st to September 14th, 2015).
However, she would not be able to add any more points at the French Open as the defending champion, but she has cemented her position. She will continue to strive for more when the grass season begins.
