49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan can’t seem to catch a break. Latest, he has provided an update on the ongoing contract negotiations with star offensive tackle Trent Williams. In a recent interview, Shanahan expressed optimism about the team’s progress in securing Williams’ long-term future with the franchise.
Shanahan told KNBR that he has been in contact with Trent Williams. The head coach also assured that the 49ers are doing their part of the deal by negotiating hard with the OT. Regarding Brandon Aiyuk, Shanahan stated that there are no new developments and that he wishes he had more to report.
I’ve had some contact with him. Been good talking to him. We're negotiating hard. Hopefully it’s getting close.Shanahan said about contract negotiations with Williams.
The San Francisco 49ers are put in a tough spot with the tricky contract situations involving Williams and Aiyuk. Trent Williams is one of the best offensive tackles in the league and if they aim to be the biggest threat to the Chiefs’ three-peat pursuit like Tom Brady suggested, Shanahan would desperately want to have the start OT in the squad.

Brandon Aiyuk’s contract situation remains unresolved as the regular season approaches. The situation remains the same, “zero updates“. The wide receiver has been absent from training camp and preseason games due to his ongoing contract dispute. Despite the uncertainty surrounding his future, Kyle Shanahan has indicated that he has contingency plans in place to address the potential absence of Aiyuk from the team’s roster.
Trent Williams’ hefty fine pile grows as he continues to miss camp
As the offensive tackle continues to miss the 49ers camp, his fines are increasing. As per the NFL’s collective bargaining agreement, Trent has to mandatorily pay a fine of $50000 per day for missing camps. Furthermore, he is subject to a fine of one week’s base salary for any unexcused absence from a preseason game.
Considering his scheduled base salary of $20.05 million, Trent will have to pay a fine of $1.1 million for each of his preseason game miss. Although Trent Williams has three years remaining on his contract with the 49ers, none of the remaining money is guaranteed. He is scheduled to earn $20.05 million in 2024, $22.5 million in 2025, and $32.1 million in 2026.
The San Francisco 49ers have one more pre-season game left before the regular season starts. The Super Bowl runners-up will play the Las Vegas Raiders at Allegiant Stadium on Friday. The 49ers having had a mixed preseason with a win and a loss, will look forward to a win before closing out. They will start the 2024 season with a blockbuster Monday Night Football game against Aaron Rodgers’ Jets.
