The rookie was shot by a 17-year-old hailing from Tracy, California. SFPD Chief William Scott confirmed that the gun had been recovered nearby. He added that police believe the shooting was not targeted, and the suspect acted alone without any involvement from others.

The Pearsall shooting took place near the intersection of Geary Street and Grant Avenue, about a block from Union Square. Pearsall was returning to his Tesla after shopping at Louis Vuitton and Rimowa when the suspect approached him. The 23-year-old was shot in his chest while the assailant injured himself with a gunshot to the hand.

The San Francisco Police Department and the city have increased the protection in the area after the incident. Chief Scott announced that they have expedited plans to increase security in the area during the holiday season. He also noted that the shooting has hindered Union Square’s progress toward returning to pre-COVID conditions and reducing crime.

The shooting adds to Ricky Pearsall’s injury woes

The 49ers drafted Ricky Pearsall, a surprise pick as 31st overall in this year’s NFL Draft. He is the first receiver the SF team has drafted since Brandon Aiyuk in 2020. However, the rookie hasn’t been available for the preseason owing to injuries sidelining him.

The shooting incident has added more woes to his overall condition. He has been taking some time to heal from a subluxation (partial dislocation) of his shoulder, an injury dating back to his college time. It cannot be predicted how long Pearsall has to be sidelined. However, taking his early exit from the hospital into consideration, he might return earlier than expected.

Pearsall has collected some serious stats during his college time. In five years combined, three at Arizona State and two at Florida, Pearsall recorded 2,420 receiving yards and 14 touchdowns on 159 grabs. He was also the Florida Gators’ top punt returner last season.
