Cowboys fans won’t like NFL insider’s report on Mike McCarthy’s future in Dallas

Mike McCarthy's future with the Cowboys is safe for the moment because he has the backing of owner Jerry Jones regardless of what happens in the final weeks.

Narratives keep changing as the season progresses, which may be the case for Mike McCarthy at the Dallas Cowboys. Fans wanted McCarthy out when the Cowboys lost five games in a row, but there was a shift in the atmosphere when they started to win games.

Owner Jerry Jones stuck with McCarthy even after the Cowboys blew their postseason adventure on the first hurdle last year. And despite the losses (Lions, 49ers, Falcons, Eagles, and Texans), Jones did not waver from his standpoint.

Those defeats cost the Cowboys valuable ground for a spot in the wild card which ended in week 15 even though they secured four wins from five (Commanders, Giants, Panthers, and Buccaneers). At this point, the Cowboys played without starters Dak Prescott, DaRon Bland, DeMarcus Lawrence and several others but still won games, swaying the narrative in Mike McCarthy’s favor.

NFL insider for The Athletic Dianna Russini confided that the situation is favorable for McCarthy to retain his job for another year.

[The Dallas Cowboys] weren’t winning; they seemed lost, and now they’re surging. [Moreover], their offense is clicking. So, why are you going to move on to a guy who’s won this many games for you? Perhaps maybe not in the big dance, but he’s got all the right things.

Dianna Russini said while speaking with Colin Cowherd on FS1’s The Herd.

Russini further added that if Jones does fire McCarthy after the 2024 season then there will be teams ready to scoop him up. Teams such as the New England Patriots and the Chicago Bears are the likeliest places the 61-year-old might end up at.

Jerry Jones isn’t ready to give up on Mike McCarthy just yet

The Cowboys are set to face off against divisional rivals the 12-3 Philadelphia Eagles in week 17 and end the campaign by hosting the Washington Commanders. Some analysts view this as a litmus test for McCarthy’s survival. Jones, on the other hand, sent clear signals that he is happy with the coaching staff and the final two games may not be too consequential.

I can’t tell you how proud I am of the way the coaching staff, led by Mike McCarthy, the way that the leadership on this team, and really proud of these young players. They just are growing mentally and physically by leaps and bounds; it makes me think we’ve got and outstanding future ahead of us.

Jerry Jones said on 105.3 The Fan via The Athletic’s Jon Machota.

McCarthy may have only two postseason victories as the Cowboys’ head coach, but he also has two divisional titles and a 49-33 record (three seasons with a 12-5 record). So, it doesn’t make sense to just give up on him after just one bad year when they can still finish above .500.
