Kyle Shanahan’s biggest fears came true on Monday concerning Brandon Aiyuk. The fifth-year wide receiver looks set to miss the rest of the season after suffering an ACL injury.

Doctors checked on him after Sunday’s high-voltage game against the Kansas City Chiefs. Although he was able to put pressure on his left leg (knee), he had trouble walking properly.

The doctors were waiting for the MRI results that confirmed Brandon Aiyuk tore his ACL and MCL. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Aiyuk will miss the rest of the season.

The 26-year-old injured himself during his second catch of the game from Brock Purdy. Chiefs defenders Trent McDuffie and Chamarri Conner teamed up to bring the 49ers wideout down, but not before he gained 15 yards.

The impact of the tackle bent Aiyuk’s left knee in the opposite direction. Both he and Deebo Samuel (illness) were ruled out as the 49ers suffered an 18-28 loss to the Chiefs to sit with a 3-4 record after seven weeks of regular season football.

Possible replacements for Brandon Aiyuk in the 49ers team

The Niners are losing players practically every week. Both Christian McCaffrey and Drew Greenlaw haven’t played a single snap since the Super Bowl in February, Aiyuk is out for the entire campaign, and Samuel remains a big concern.

On a positive note, rookie Ricky Pearsall made his debut on Sunday after recovering from a bullet wound. Moreover, the 49ers have players such as Jauan Jennings and Jacob Cowing, who can step up when required.

A good example of new and unknown players balling out this year would be Jordan Mason. The undrafted free-agent running back has made the spot his own in the absence of McCaffrey. Mason currently has the second most rushing yards (667)—only behind the Ravens Derrick Henry (704) in the first seven weeks.

Shanahan would hope the young ones will slot in quickly for the next few weeks or until they have a full-strength squad.

Brandon Aiyuk aside, 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy had one of the worst games of his three-year career on Sunday. Purdy completed 17 of 31 passes for 212 yards and threw 3 interceptions. He only tallied a quarterback rating of 43.09, which is awful compared to his high 100s in most games.

Shanahan reportedly grilled his quarterback after the game. However, things are only going to be harder for him without Aiyuk, Deebo, and McCaffrey. The 49ers’ next game is against the struggling Dallas Cowboys, who just completed their bye week. They can’t take the Dallas outfit lightly despite the poor form.
