Breaking, aka break dancing, is making its Olympics debut at the 2024 Summer Games. Olympic Breaking joins other non-traditional sports at the Paris Olympics 2024, including surfing, skateboarding, and sport climbing. Per usual, the sensational Snoop Dogg broke ground on the sport recently.
Paris Olympics tried to be the all-inclusive hub of modern cultures and thrill. However, its drag rendition of Greek pagan feasts looked very similar to ‘The Last Supper’. Ever since, the 2024 Summer Games and Paris organizers have caught flak for driving anti-Christian woke agendas, allegedly. That along with the drone conspiracy, and the riots, has not helped. While break dancing hardly qualifies as an agenda, yet, the concept has failed to gain much traction amongst the youth it is for.
As part of a push to attract a younger audience to the Games, Breaking will play a part in the Olympics for the first time on August 9 and 10. The competition will take place at La Concorde, which is part of a large public square in Paris. In addition to BMX freestyle, skateboarding, and 3X3 basketball, and two events for 16 B-boys and 16 B-girls. Which concurrently are the breaking terms for male and female dancers in break dancing.
While there have been many sensational performers over the years, not many things can topple the nostalgia of Snoop Dogg carrying the torch at the Paris Olympics 2024. Well, maybe Celine Dion or Beyonce can compare with their stunning performances, but that’s about it. Yet even Snoop Dogg could not save face on this new venture. As such, the matter has gone viral responses.
Netizens react to the debut of Olympic Breaking
Breaking begins Friday with the women’s competition at 4 p.m. here in Paris (10 a.m. ET) and throughout the evening. The men will follow on Saturday. The bronze and gold-medal battles happen at 3:15 p.m. ET each day. American rapper Snoop Dogg and the Olympics have been an iconic duo so far; yet again he kickstarted the opening of break dancing, aka Olympic Breaking for Paris 2024.
The singer took the audience in attendance back to Paris in the 1100s. He stamped the brigadier, better called the Les trois coups, on the podium where the ‘battles’ began. ‘Les trois coups’ is a medieval Parisian theater tradition to signal showtime. The same three shots were used by American tennis legend Billie Jean King to open tennis at the Paris Games. Paris Olympics 2024 adopted it to mark the start of each Olympic sport.
However, even such spectacles did not fall in favor of enthusiasts.
With breaking making its Olympic debut, subsequently. many have lauded the highlighting of diversity and including an athletic form of showcasing that was chided upon for years. However, most others have claimed this isn’t an Olympic-caliber sporting event. All in all, only time will tell if this sport gains any positive traction.
