On Monday night Paul Skenes was announced the winner of the Rookie of the Year award. The MLB rookie had his girlfriend, Livvy Dunne, to accompany him in his celebratory occasion. While the 22-year-old seldom made missteps on the ground, he did an unexpected one during the announcement.

Following the announcement of the ROTY winner, Skenes, probably having anticipated as much, remained stock-still besides a small grin and a couple barely-there nods. Dunne, on the other hand, seemed happier than Skenes as she enthusiastically clapped her hands and looked at Skenes, likely hoping for a tangible reaction.

As the LSU gymnast went in for a hug, the two bumped into an awkward exchange. Dunne went left for a cheek kiss but Skenes, having not understood, went in straight, making Dunne reroute. The couple settled for a hug as Skenes gave Dunne a shoulder embrace of acknowledgement.

The news of the award win did not come as a surprise to the fans, considering the Pittsburgh Pirates rookie completely dominated the season. Skenes also led the LSU to the national championship and was selected No. 1 overall in the draft. The 22-year-old also made his debut in the All-Star Game for the National League.

All the while, Paul Skenes had Livvy Dunne as a supporter in the stands. The couple first met at the LSU but started dating later in the Summer of 2023.

Due to the American gymnast’s high social media presence and Skenes’ talent, the couple rose to fame in the blink of an eye. In addition to being a social media sensation, Dunne led the LSU gymnastics team to a national championship in 2024, returning for her fifth season.

Post the award, Paul Skenes and Livvy Dunne appeared on ESPN’s ‘SportsCenter‘. As the show hosts congratulated Skenes, they asked the rookie about his reflections on the accomplishment.

After moments of consideration, the three word reaction was a typical-Skenes move. “This is cool,” responded Skenes.

Paul Skenes’ stark contrast with his girlfriend, Livvy Dunne, is part of the reason why the duo became one of the most popular couples in sports. While the celebrations might still be up, Skenes might add another accolade to his name soon. The Pirates rookie is still in the nominations to win the CY Young award, which will announce the winner coming Wednesday.
