Ravichandran Ashwin, the legendary off spinner of the Indian Cricket Team, called it quits from international cricket after the end of the third Test match of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy. He definitely has been India’s greatest-ever matchwinner in Test cricket and a big reason why India did not lose a Test series at home between 2012 and 2024.

Former India cricketer and the spin legend EAS Prasanna heaped praise on Ashwin and expressed his surprise at his decision to call it quits from international cricket. Prasanna feels that Ashwin was not picked in the playing XI in the overseas tours, and that is the reason why he was forced to take the decision of his retirement.

I was surprised by his decision to retire. Maybe he got some indication from the team management that he is no longer in the scheme of things which might have forced him to take his decision. He didn’t get to play matches whenever India traveled overseas, including in the current tour of Australia, and that might have played a role in his decision.

EAS Prasanna said in an interview to Rediff.com

Ashwin has played 106 Test matches and has picked up 537 Test wickets at an average of 24.01 and a strike-rate of 50.74. He has 37 five-wicket hauls and eight ten-wicket hauls in Test cricket.

The Tamil Nadu man has definitely been sidelined in the SENA Test matches in the last few years. He was also not picked in the first Test match in the ongoing Australian Tour and was dropped in the third Test match as well.

EAS Prasanna calls Ravichandran Ashwin the Greatest spinner of this era

Prasanna called Ashwin the greatest spinner of this era and highlighted that he is the second-highest wicket-taker for India after Anil Kumble. He also stated that Ashwin is the last classical off-spinner of this generation along with the Aussie, Nathan Lyon, and wants him to get into coaching roles.

I would say he is the greatest spinner of this era. He had a great record, the second-highest wicket taker for India after Anil Kumble. He is the last of the classical spinners of this generation, along with Nathan Lyon, who excelled in the Test format. With all his qualities, he would be better off imparting his knowledge to younger players in coaching and mentoring roles.

Meanwhile, the ongoing BGT is level at 1-1, and the next test match will be the Boxing Day Test at the MCG. If India win either of the Tests at the MCG or the SCG, then they will retain the trophy. However, if they win both, then they will also qualify for the WTC final without depending on anyone.
