Yashasvi Jaiswal has been a sensation since making his debut in Test cricket for India. He has been one of the most consistent batters for Team India and one of the best young batters going around. However, in the six innings of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024/25, he has performed in only one innings, and the rest of the five innings have been below par for a batter like him. Jaiswal smashed a century in the second innings of the first Test match in Perth but hasn’t been at his best since then.

Ahead of the Boxing Day Test match at the MCG, former India opener and current analyst, Aakash Chopra, shared his two cents on the problems of Jaiswal. He stated that the young batter is having an issue against left-arm pacers in all formats of the game.

Chopra stated that he does not have good numbers against left-arm pace, and that problem is getting exploited by Mitchell Starc in this series, who is back to his best. Starc has caused a lot of issues for Jaiswal in this series, and he really looks troubled against him at the start of his innings.

The truth is that Yashasvi Jaiswal is having problems against left-arm pace, and this problem has not started now. It’s been happening regularly. This was happening in the IPL as well, which means it is not a format-specific problem. It is not a Mitchell Starc problem.

Chopra also talked about Shubman Gill‘s problems and highlighted how he has not scored more than 40 runs outside the subcontinent in the last three years. His last 40+ score outside Asia came in the Gabba Test match in 2021, which India went on to win. Chopra added that Gill has looked good, but it has not yielded the results that India would have wanted.

Shubman Gill – it’s been 16 or 17 innings where he hasn’t scored more than 40 runs outside Asia in the last three years. The last time he did that was in Brisbane when India won the series. It’s been a while. The expectations are the same from you. He was looking good [while batting], but looking good is not good enough in this batting order at this point in time.

Chopra added that Jaiswal is struggling against left-arm pace, Gill is not scoring big, Virat Kohli is nicking outside the off-stump deliveries, Rohit Sharma is out of form, and Rishabh Pant has failed to score runs in this series. He feels that all the batters need to make the opponents sweat and toil hard.
