One of the most stunning pro boxing dominations in recent times took place before 96,000 at Wembley on Saturday. The HW division was shaken up to the core when Daniel Dubois got the better of Anthony Joshua. Dubois pulled off the most important finish of his run (Saturday, September 21st) Live on DAZN Pay-Per-View (PPV) from London. He was defending his IBF HW title over the former champ and KO artist.
Dubois was a massive underdog in front of 96,000 watching. But from the opening bell, he left nothing to be desired. He slumped Anthony Joshua towards the end of R1 and hurt him badly. As if that wasn’t enough, Dubois doubled down in the third round, securing another knockdown. AJ had big dreams of bringing the division back on track with yet another reign; however, the opponent rattled him big!
Joshua looked to be on his way out in R4 but clawed back up. He had Dubois on the ropes with a big right in Round 5. However, Joshua then threw a wild right hand which Dubois answered with a right of his own, sending AJ down hard. In a faceplant reminiscent of that of his fadeout over Francis Ngannou, he folded. However, he did try to get his massive frame up towards the last few counts. The referee then reeled him in and out, as he was out for the count.
Dubois dropped the home-ground fave in rounds one, three, four, and five. The final blow came from IBF Interim champion Daniel ‘Dynamite’ Dubois at 0:59 of the fifth round. Subsequently, the upset over the former unified HW champion has gone viral.
Combat Sports Twitter react to Daniel Dubois’ massive KO upset over Anthony Joshua
The age of Joshua and his recent recovery following back-to-back defeats to Oleksandr Usyk meant he is unlikely to lose again. At the very least AJ precluded the idea. He had heavy-handed intentions going into the fight.
But so did Daniel Dubois. who kept violent intentions of his own and stuck to it. Promoter Eddie Hearn claimed AJ is not on track with losing and that he has a rematch clause. Joshua also has the safety net of a clause with 35-year-old Brit Tyson Fury (34-1-1, 24 KOs), under the didactics of boxing promoter Frank Warren. The former WBA (Super), IBF, WBO, and IBO titleholder can fall back to an all-time “Battle of Britain” challenge after December.
So it’s not like Joshua just fumbles out of the equation just yet. However, this performance was a clear earmark of how good Dubois is. The combat sports community kept a keen eye on and followed through on the Joshua-bad vs. Dubois-good line. Here are a few top reactions:
AJ’s trainer, Ben Davison, jumped into the ring after the countout. Davison felt Joshua had been punished enough. The through-and-through beatdown was quite something. The knockout drew live reactions from Usyk, Fury, and even Conor McGregor, who attended the event. Boxing standouts like Jake Paul and Ryan Garcia also tweeted over the discourse.
Hearn wouldn’t say if Joshua (28-4, 23 KO) will activate his revenge clause immediately or later. Joshua didn’t look good tonight, getting knocked down repeatedly, so he’ll need to consider the next steps in camp. However, this KO and the skill vs. will discourse, will remain one for ages.
