On Sunday night in Miami, WWE held a live event at the Kaseya Center. In the main event, Cody Rhodes successfully defended his Undisputed WWE title against Kevin Owens in a steel cage match. After emerging triumphant, The American Nightmare spotted a young cancer survivor in the crowd. Cody asked him to come over in the ring.
After pampering the kind soul, Rhodes gifted his classic weight belt to the child. Cody hugged him and waved at the crowd with the kid perched on his shoulder. To close out the show, the former AEW EVP expressed gratitude for the attendees and wished everyone safe travel back home. The champ even said he’d sign some autographs and take photos before exiting.
That’s no surprise from a man who’s done the exact same at almost every house show he’s been a part of this year. It speaks volumes about Cody’s work ethic, and no wonder why he’s loved by a majority of the fans. With that being said, what a year it has been for the 39-year-old.
He finally finished his story at WrestleMania XL, beating Roman Reigns to end his 1316-day title reign. In October, he even joined forces with Reigns for one night only. They took down Solo Sikoa and Jacob Fatu at Bad Blood. At the end of the show, The Rock showed up, staring down at everyone. But there hasn’t been a follow-up to it.
For a long time, the fans anticipated that Rock would be Rhodes’ opponent at WrestleMania 41. That ship hasn’t sailed yet, and there’s certainly a possibility that it may still happen. However, if somehow The Great One couldn’t make it, WWE has discussed pitting Rhodes against John Cena at The Show of Shows.
Is Cody Rhodes up for Kevin Owens’ menacing arc?
For the next month, Cody Rhodes needs to keep his head on a swivel. Why’s that? He’s lined up for a title defense at Royal Rumble against Kevin Owens in a ladder match. The Prizefighter has made it difficult for Cody to breathe easy.
That package piledriver Owens nailed on Rhodes is still afresh in everyone’s minds. On SmackDown this past Friday, the Canuck aimed cheap shots at Cody’s neck after pushing GM Nick Aldis into him.
Having lost the previous two encounters against The Prodigal Son, Owens has a chip on his shoulder. If he doesn’t win at the Rumble, Kevin wouldn’t only lose yet another world title match, but also he’d need to vacate the Winged Eagle belt that he’s held hostage since Saturday Night’s Main Event.
