“A chance to f**k him up,” Roman Reigns reveals why he cracked Seth Rollins with a brutal chair shot that eventually cost him the Undisputed WWE title at WrestleMania 40
The OTC couldn't look any further when he saw Seth Rollins' back turned on him at WrestleMania 40. What followed that is history.

There’s always a Plan B. Those were the words uttered by Triple H on Raw in June 2014 before Seth Rollins took a swing at Roman Reigns‘ back with a steel chair. That was the end of The Shield. Almost a decade later, when Reigns saw Seth on spaghetti legs at WrestleMania XL, Roman returned the favor. That allowed Cody Rhodes to capitalize, and he pinned Reigns to end his 1316-day title reign.
Recounting that moment, Reigns told Jimmy Traina of SI that he’d continue hurting Seth anytime he got a chance to do so. That’s how much The OTC loathes his former stablemate. Roman affirmed that Rollins is a lifelong lesson for him when it comes to trusting others. It also helps him discern the people who he needs to keep at bay.
No matter how dominant Reigns has been over the past few years, The Visionary has always kept him in check. Even after reigning atop the WWE Universe with an iron fist, Roman has yet to pin Seth at a premium live event. The last time they met was in 2022 at the Royal Rumble.
The match ended in a DQ as Reigns refused to unhook the guillotine off Rollins. The Head of the Table was breaking records left and right until Seth meddled in his business again. Heading into WrestleMania 40, The Architect vowed to be Cody Rhodes’ shield against the tyrannical duo of Roman Reigns and The Rock.
Rollins lived up to his word. He sacrificed himself so that Reigns’ oligarchy over the roster could plummet. Roman couldn’t let go of what Seth did to him in 2014, and that’s how he eventually lost. WWE was hailed for that masterful storytelling.
Was Roman Reigns upset over not facing The Rock at WrestleMania 40?
As mentioned above, Roman Reigns’ empire came to a devastating end at WrestleMania XL. However, it wasn’t even meant to be him against Cody Rhodes. In fact, The Rock was earmarked for that title shot.
As a result, it would’ve finally given the WWE Universe what they’d been asking for years. However, the fans were enraged seeing how WWE would lead to it. It was to be at the expense of Rhodes, whose story with Reigns was at such a critical juncture.
After the fans let their voices be heard, WWE called the audible to put Cody back into the fold. Was Roman upset at the fact that his high-profile showdown with Rock was taken away? Well, since he was technically in the main event anyway, it didn’t bother him at all.
