Zhou Guanyu has struggled to perform in Formula 1 since his arrival in the sport. The Chinese driver has failed to make a mark in the tight midfield battle. Now, 1997 F1 world champion Jacques Villeneuve claims the 25-year-old doesn’t deserve to be in the sport. Guanyu’s presence in Formula 1 is significantly influenced by the financial support he brings through sponsorships.
Jacques Villeneuve stated that Zhou Guanyu brings a lot of money from his sponsors. Guanyu has stated that doesn’t know how much money he really brings from his Chinese backers. The Canadian claimed that this money has to be dumped somewhere, whether Zhou Guanyu continues as a F1 driver or be a reserve driver. Therefore, Villeneuve suggested that the 25-year-old’s financial support is so important that it could influence where he ends up in F1.
Guanyu Zhou has a big luggage of cash in his sponsors that he needs to put somewhere, whether that’s as an F1 driver or a reserve driver.Jacques Villeneuve told Instant Casino
Jacques Villeneuve highlighted that based on Guanyu’s past performance results, he might not have deserved his Formula 1 seat. However, he brought a lot of money from his sponsors, which was very valuable for any team. Even if the Chinese had ended up as a reserve driver instead of a main driver, that sponsorship money would still have been highly beneficial. Sauber benefited greatly from Guanyu’s financial support, making it a great outcome for them, despite his racing performance.
Based on the results, Zhou doesn’t deserve a seat in F1. If a team can get all that sponsorship money that Zhou brings with him, even as a reserve drive, then it’s a great result for them.Jacques Villeneuve added
Zhou Guanyu claims nothing’s been decided regarding his future
Zhou Guanyu mentioned that he definitely wants to stay with his current team Sauber. He made it clear to the media that he enjoys being with Sauber and hopes to continue there. However, he also mentioned that he is looking into other opportunities and talking to other teams. Hence, while he would like to stay with Sauber, he is still considering his options. The 25-year-old emphasized that no final decision about where he will race next has been made yet.
I want to stay here, that’s very clear. But of course we’re talking to different options, as well as with Sauber. Nothing’s been decided.Zhou Guanyu said, as reported by PlanetF1
Even if Zhou Guanyu gets kicked from his current team, any team in need of money could sign him. The Chinese sponsors would likely follow him wherever he goes, regardless of his performances.
