F1 usually revolves around the top teams scoring wins and championships. On the other hand, multiple teams often fight for the last few spots in the constructor’s standings to ensure a constant influx of money. However, Williams has found itself in a tough position as its incumbent driver, Logan Sargeant, has not scored a single point this season and has cost the team millions in damages. This has warranted the team to look outside its pool of drivers, and Mick Schumacher seems the most viable alternative.
Mick Schumacher is the son of legendary driver Michael Schumacher. The German debuted in 2021 with Haas and was noted as a potential Ferrari driver. However, with the fame of carrying the Schumacher name, huge responsibilities were also put on the young driver, which he could not fulfill. This led the American outfit to sack him in favor of a senior German in the form of Nico Hulkenberg.
Despite this, the 25-year-old did not lose determination and became Mercedes‘ reserve driver. Moreover, he is currently a WEC driver for Alpine and has left his imprint on the motorsport world.
According to Lwos, witnessing Schumacher’s growth and Williams’ own driver’s slack in performance, James Vowles is eyeing Schumacher as a possible replacement for Logan Sargeant. These reports have flooded the paddock as the American has been unable to tame the FW46 and has constantly struggled season-long.
Where does Liam Lawson stand in the Williams-Mick Schumacher saga?
Though Schumacher is known for his impressive junior series records, a similar reserve driver has been eyeing for a seat on the grid. Liam Lawson, a Red Bull junior, proved himself last year when he jumped in as a substitute for an injured Daniel Ricciardo.
However, the Kiwi would have to be loaned out to Williams, which might make the contract filled with quite a few clauses.
It would depend on which terms and if we needed him back that we could have him back quite quickly. But certainly, if they needed a driver next weekend [at Monza], we'd be open to that. But that's a Williams question rather than one for us to answer.Christian Horner said in an interview as quoted by Motorsport.com
Christian Horner revealed that Red Bull is open to letting Lawson go to Williams as soon as Monza. On the contrary, he explained that if any Red Bull-owned teams need a driver, they might need the 22-year-old to be available on short notice, which might not be acceptable to the English team.
Apart from this, Lawson is assured a seat for the 2025 season by the Austrian giant. Thus, he would have a seat on the grid for next year and Schumacher would like to replicate the Kiwi driver’s fortune by impressing the paddock on his potential substitute Williams performances and then getting a full-time seat later on.
