The breakup of the relationship between Red Bull and Adrian Newey sent trembles within the paddock. On the contrary, teams ushered in to capitalize on the opportunity to hire the design wizard. Regardless of their attempts, Aston Martin‘s offer could not be matched by anyone else, as the Brit explained the reason behind his move to Silverstone.
Adrian Newey joined Red Bull in 2006 after a brief stint at McLaren. The Brit was renowned for his vast understanding of aerodynamics, which helped the Austrian giant secure several world titles. On the other hand, Aston Martin had been expanding its facilities in Silverstone and signed an engine deal with Honda from 2026 and beyond.
Moreover, Newey revealed that he was offered a chance to become a shareholder in the Aston Martin project that no other manufacturer was able to match.
And, to have the chance to be a shareholder and a partner is something that has never been offered to me before. So, it's a slightly different stance, but one which I am really looking forward to. It became a very natural choice.Adrian Newey said at Aston Martin’s press conference
The legendary British designer explained how the chance to become an equity holder within the team was never offered to him earlier. This act explained his value within the team, making the English outfit a natural choice for him as the next chapter in his F1 career.
Fernando Alonso welcomes Adrian Newey to Aston Martin
With Newey joining hands with Aston Martin, Fernando Alonso would end up partnering up with his former rival. The designs made by the Brit had been responsible for aiding Red Bull to win the championship against the Spaniard in his Ferrari days.
While Newey’s regret of never working with the two-time world champion would soon come to an end, the 43-year-old let go of his grudges to start a new chapter.
We've been racing against each other for many years. I would say that he was more an inspiration, and I think, thanks to Adrian and his talent and cars, we all got better. And, on a personal side, an incredible opportunity to work with these people that you can learn so much from.Fernando Alonso said at Aston Martin’s press conference
The Aston Martin driver accepted that despite being each other’s rivals for a long time, the 65-year-old acted as an inspiration to him within the paddock. Moreover, he asserted that it would be an incredible opportunity for him to work with Newey.
Despite having a great arsenal of top drivers and designers, Aston Martin still has to bear the problem of Lance Stroll not performing to the limit with the machinery he is provided with. Thus, they could get a championship-winning car by the addition of Newey to the team but would have to bear the problem of an underperforming Canadian driver in the long run.
