The Qatar GP is the penultimate race of the 2024 F1 season. Fernando Alonso and Aston Martin hoped to potentially score some points this weekend in Lusail. However, the two-time world champion ended up ranting on team radio shortly after the start of the race.
Fernando Alonso started from eighth place, ahead of Red Bull’s Sergio Perez. Unfortunately, the Spanish driver did not have the best of opening laps as he lost a couple of places. It seemed that Alonso’s AMR24 simply did not have the straight line to speed to match rivals in Lusail.
The two-time world champion did not hold back his anger on the team radio. Fernando Alonso claimed that he just could not understand how the team has faced the same straight line speed problem for the past two seasons. The excess drag has hampered Alonso’s prospects ever since he joined Aston Martin in 2023.

Fernando Alonso sole Aston Martin left at Qatar GP after Lance Stroll’s retirement
Alonso’s teammate Lance Stroll had a worse start to the race. The Canadian driver made contact with Alex Albon‘s Williams. Subsequently, Aston Martin instructed Stroll to retire the car due to the excessive damage incurred on his AMR24. On the other hand, Fernando Alonso did recover from his poor first few laps after making an impressive maneuver on Yuki Tsunoda.

Fernando Alonso and Aston Martin have work to do to get to the front of the F1 midfield next season. The Spanish driver will be making it known that the team must focus on straight line speed. It remains to be seen if the Silverstone-based squad can fix this issue over the winter break.
