Recently, the Williams driver saga has been in the F1 limelight. The massive delta between Logan Sargeant and Alex Albon plus the former’s recent Zandvoort crash, urged James Vowles to pull the plug on the American. Sargeant has been sacked in favor of junior driver, Franco Colapinto. Soon after this announcement, the 23-year-old made a statement reflecting on the English team’s decision, which he ultimately deleted just a few moments later.
A total of 58 American drivers have raced in the pinnacle of motorsport. Moreover, FOM has been wanting to increase its audience in the states, leading to massive actions being taken on the calendar side. On the other hand, as indicated above, the only US driver in F1 was recently fired by Williams after Logan Sargeant‘s crash at the Dutch GP weekend.
Sargeant was shocked about the news and took to his app to express the thoughts that he was going through.
Hi everyone, after today's news, I wanted to say that I am super thankful to Williams Racing for giving me my first opportunity in Formula 1. I am so grateful for the support I received from everyone at the team from the moment I first joined the Academy back in 2021.Logan Sargeant wrote on his app
The 23-year-old further added:
Going on to drive an F1 car for the first time in Abu Dhabi was the experience of a lifetime, while becoming the first American points scorer for 30 years in Austin last season was a really special moment. I am proud to have represented such a historic team over the last two seasons. For now, I will be taking time to assess my options, before making an announcement on my future in due course. Thank you.Logan Sargeant wrote
Sargeant explained his experience with the Grove-based team and dwelled deeper into how Williams has been a great partner in aiding his racing career. However, this post was deleted soon after going public, the reasons for which are not disclosed yet.
James Vowles admitted the decision to be ‘incredibly tough’ on Logan Sargeant
The 23-year-old was the second driver US driver since Alexander Rossi raced in F1. Sargeant was in his sophomore year and played the team game whenever Williams needed him. However, despite his best efforts, he was sacked, to which Alex Albon related and asserted how brutal the F1 world really is.
Subsequently, team supremo James Vowles also admitted that terminating Sargeant’s contract was incredibly tough on the American.
This is undoubtedly incredibly tough on Logan, who has given his all throughout his time with Williams, and we want to thank him for all his hard work and positive attitude. Logan remains a talented driver and we will support him to continue his racing career for the future. I know that Franco has great speed and huge potential, and we look forward to seeing what he can do in Formula 1.James Vowles said in the press release by the team
The Brit claimed that the 23-year-old had given his all for the team and wished him well for his future endeavors. However, with the increasing pressure of the cost cap among teams, it became inevitable to fire him as costs for his regular crash damages soon started denting the spending limit.
On the contrary, Franco Colapinto would get his chance at the big game at Monza. The Argentine would like to forge his name in the paddock like Juan Manuel Fangio and become a force to be reckoned with on the fierce F1 grid.
