Oscar Piastri made his F1 debut in 2023 after one of the most controversial contract sagas in the sport’s history. The Australian driver made the right choice to join McLaren alongside Lando Norris. Though, Piastri faces a tense situation at Woking following the conclusion of the 2024 season.

The 23-year-old had a decent campaign in 2024, winning two races and nine podiums. On the other hand, Piastri’s teammate Lando Norris fared an even better season. The Briton was the only driver who truly challenged Max Verstappen for the first time since 2021. The Woking-based team even went on to take its first Constructors’ title since 1998.

Oscar Piastri was forced to follow team orders this season to help Norris’ title bid. Ultimately, Lando Norris failed to win the championship, yet the current status of Piastri within the team was hampered significantly by this decision.

Oscar Piastri risks fading away at McLaren

Piastri’s Manager Mark Webber faced a difficult stint at Red Bull during Sebastian Vettel‘s dominance. Webber succumbed to a number 2 role within Milton Keynes, which saw him get overlooked by the paddock. Now, Oscar Piastri risks a similar situation.

The 23-year-old undoubtedly has the talent to win in Formula 1. Oscar Piastri has proved it several times that he could be a world champion in the future. However, his potential would be in vain if he fails to show it against Norris consistently.

Piastri understands that he cannot have a repeat of 2024 when he is forced to accept team orders. This could be detrimental to his position within the team. As Lando Norris further consolidates the British squad around him, alarm bells would be ringing in the Australian driver’s camp.

2025 will be a clean slate at McLaren. Oscar Piastri can resolidify his place within the team if he matches Norris from the get-go. Moreover, the Australian driver can even sway things in his favor if he plays his cards right.
