While fans expected the top three qualifiers to be compromised of the top teams, Pierre Gasly shocked everyone by putting up his Alpine in P3 ahead of Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen. Subsequently, the Frenchman’s mammoth effort did not go unrecognized as the Dutchman revealed that he congratulated Gasly on his top three performance at the Las Vegas GP.
Pierre Gasly‘s 2024 season has been full of ups and downs. He started the season finishing outside the points-paying positions as the Alpine had been a woeful car. However, as the season progressed, the Alpine A524 got better, aiding the 28-year-old to bag in heaps of points for the Enstone-based outfit.
On the other hand, Max Verstappen and Gasly’s relationship has also grown warmer in recent times. So when the Alpine driver qualified P3 for the Las Vegas GP, the Dutchman went on to congratulate him on his massive feat.
max: i told pierre already “well done!”. i mean, it’s an incredible result for him and the team. and it’s also going to be exciting to see them tomorrow, how it goes for them. he did great qualifying! pic.twitter.com/CLBCpFkmyu

However, whether Gasly would be able to retain his P3 spot in the race remains an entirely different question, as he would be hounded by the faster cars of Ferrari, Red Bull, and McLaren. Thus, a tough and long race remains ahead of the Frenchman if he intends to continue his streak of finishing on the podium.
Pierre Gasly’s take on emotions after knowing about his P3 quali-position
Following in line with this, qualifying does not entirely dictate how a driver would finish the race. Moreover, one of the prime examples of such instances could be the Brazilian GP, where Verstappen climbed up from P17 to win the event.
Despite knowing this, the excitement of qualifying in the top three means a lot for the midfield teams. This was appropriately described by Gasly as he got a burst of happiness knowing that he had qualified P3, after having a torrid season for the majority of the 2024 campaign.
Pierre Gasly: "It's unbelievable, we didn't think we would be able to achieve a top three in quali. It was an incredible lap, a lot of adrenaline, a lot of excitement. I knew crossing the line it was a good lap, but when they told me it was top three I was so happy."

On the other hand, Verstappen’s P5 qualification might just do enough for him to win the title on Saturday. This would help him join the elite list of drivers including Michael Schumacher, Juan Manuel Fangio, Lewis Hamilton, and Sebastian Vettel, who all have won four driver titles in a row.
