Carlos Sainz and Ferrari headed into the Las Vegas GP with positive expectations. The Scuderia hoped to prove a match to Red Bull and McLaren. However, the Spanish driver exceeded expectations and went on to outqualify Max Verstappen and Lando Norris.

Sainz will start the race from P2 on Sunday, behind pole-sitter George Russell. While Verstappen and Norris failed to come close to the pole lap time. Carlos Sainz confessed that it was a tricky session for Ferrari. The 30-year-old was surprised to find himself on the front row.

Very tricky. It was a tough quali. A bit closer to pole than what I was expecting, but very happy.

Moreover, the Ferrari driver set his sights for Sunday’s race. Carlos Sainz reckoned that he was in a strong position for the Grand Prix. The Spaniard would be looking to make a move on George Russell at Turn 1 for the lead tomorrow.

Carlos Sainz urges Ferrari to stay ‘confident’

Sainz emphasized that the Scuderia will need to remain confident about challenging at the front of the grid. The Spanish driver highlighted that the team needs wins to potentially defeat McLaren for the Constructors’ title. As such, Maranello needs to win the Las Vegas GP to stay in contention for the world championship.

We need to stay confident that we can fight at the front, and have a chance at going for the win. I think we need wins to beat McLaren, we can’t just finish ahead of them. We are going to Qatar next, where we will be struggling.

Certainly, Carlos Sainz is thrilled to finish P2 in Qualifying. However, things could get tough in the race. Max Verstappen and Lando Norris would be looking to move up places on Sunday. Thus, it remains to be seen if Sainz can fend off threats from behind in his battle for race victory.
