Carlos Sainz became the hot topic in the driver market after Ferrari signed Lewis Hamilton. The Spanish driver was in talks with several teams before ultimately going with Williams. Now, Alpine Executive Advisor Flavio Briatore has mentioned why his discussions failed with the 30-year-old.

Crashgate mastermind Briatore was determined to have Sainz at Alpine. The 30-year-old would’ve been an ideal fit for the Enstone-based team. Flavio Briatore admitted that he did have conversations with the Spaniard. Though, the French team was only interested in a four-year deal with the former Ferrari driver.

I spoke to Sainz. He was interesting for us, but only for four years.

The Alpine Executive Advisor claimed that it would’ve been senseless to hire Carlos Sainz on a short-term contract. Flavio Briatore asserted that if the Spaniard believed in Alpine’s project, he would’ve signed a long-term deal. The French team will promote junior driver Jack Doohan next season.

It makes no sense to take a driver like Carlos for one or two years. Either he believes in our program or he doesn’t.

It is no secret that Carlos Sainz wants to race for a top team in F1. The 30-year-old failed to land a seat at Mercedes or Red Bull. However, the Spanish driver could jump ship from Williams if he finds an opportunity at the front, including a Ferrari return. Flavio Briatore made it clear that he didn’t want a driver who would leave the team when the first opportunity came.

I don’t need a driver who costs me a lot of money and is looking to go to another team when the opportunity arises.

Flavio Briatore added

It seems that Sainz and Alpine had different ideas for a potential reunion. Carlos Sainz had raced for the Enstone team under its Renault guise in 2017 and 2018. The Spanish driver is now focused on helping develop Williams in the tight F1 midfield.
