Fernando Alonso made a return back to F1 with Alpine in 2021 after his two-year sabbatical. Since then, he has been trying to get back to the sharp end of the field with Aston Martin. He has a long-term deal seeing out the 2026 season, and his manager Flavio Briatore asserted that the 43-year-old is as hungry as ever to reign the F1 sphere.

Flavio Briatore made a return back to F1 formally after Renault (Alpine) decided to make the Italian the Executive Advisor for its operations. On the other hand, he has been the manager of Fernando Alonso for over two decades and oversees the Spaniard’s decisions revolving around the sport.

Subsequently, the 74-year-old was asked about how Alonso has been able to maintain his longevity in F1. Briatore deemed the Aston Martin driver as an exception owing to the incentives he has for continuing to race in the F1 circus.

Fernando is the exception. I have been his manager for 22 years. He has money, but no children. And he is still hungry.

While Alonso has maintained his resilience in the sport, he has reiterated how 2026 would probably be his last season in the sport. He would be 45 by then but might want to continue racing if he gets a lucrative deal from Aston Martin owner Lawrence Stroll.

Flavio Briatore lays out the timeline for Alpine’s success

Though Aston Martin has been able to move in an upward trajectory since their rebranding in 2021, the same cannot be said for the Enstone-based outfit. Alpine moved up to fourth in 2022 and showed promising results, which was the main reason behind Pierre Gasly making the switch to the French team.

However, this progress soon mellowed down as the team dropped to sixth in 2023 and maintained the same result this year. Despite this, Briatore was certain that Alpine could become a title contender as early as 2027.

We have much more aerodynamic leeway than Ferrari or McLaren. In 2026, we want to compete for podium places in 50 percent of all races. Then you automatically win one or another race. In 2027, we must be able to compete for the title.

While Briatore is quite certain about the French giant’s road toward success, Renault has not been similarly faithful with its F1 project as it decided to end its engine operations. Thus, becoming a championship contender without a works team entry might be a difficult task for the Enstone-based outfit as they would be entering their customer team era in 2026.
