Former World No.1 doubles player Rennae Stubbs has joined the growing number of people criticizing Yulia Putintseva for her inappropriate behavior towards a ball girl. The incident occurred during Putintseva’s third-round match against Jasmine Paolini.

During the match, Putintseva was about to serve but refused to take the balls from the ball girl despite the girl repeatedly throwing them at her. It appeared that Putintseva was either frustrated with her performance or something related to the ball girl.

As a result of this incident, many current and former tennis players have condemned Putintseva’s reaction. Tennis great Boris Becker was among the notable names to join this criticism.

The disrespect and obnoxious behavior here is unbelievable and typical from her.

Incidents involving tennis players and officials at the US Open are not new. In 2009, Serena Williams received a point penalty for her harsh comments directed at a lineswoman following a foot fault. Similarly, in 2020, Novak Djokovic was disqualified after accidentally hitting a lineswoman.

Jasmine Paolini blows away Yulia Putintseva to reach the US Open fourth round

No.5 seed Jasmine Paolini has become one of just two players to reach the second week of every Grand Slam in 2024. She achieved this milestone after defeating Yulia Putintseva 6-3, 6-4 in the US Open third round. Before this year, Paolini had never made it past the second round of a Grand Slam.

In 2024, she reached the fourth round at the Australian Open and played her first two Grand Slam finals at Roland Garros and Wimbledon. The only other player to reach the second week of all four Slams this year is Coco Gauff, who was a semifinalist at the Australian Open, and Roland Garros, and made the fourth round at Wimbledon.

Paolini is also the first Italian player in the Open Era to reach the second week of each Slam in one season. Her next opponent is Karolina Muchova, who was a semifinalist at the US Open in 2023. Muchova defeated Anastasia Potapova 6-4, 6-2 to advance.

Paolini and Muchova have faced each other three times before, with Muchova winning all three matches, including one at the US Open qualifying in 2018. Their last match was in January 2021. In 2021, Paolini had a memorable win against Putintseva in the Portoroz semifinals, where she came back from a set down to win 1-6, 6-3, 6-4. She went on to claim her first WTA Tour title in that event.
