Coco Gauff won her maiden Grand Slam at the 2023 US Open after staging a great comeback against Aryna Sabalenka. Expectations of the American have always been high since she burst onto the scene and beat Venus Williams on her Grand Slam debut at Wimbledon in 2019. Despite Gauff’s recent struggles, her expectations have continually remained high.
In the 2024 season, Gauff came close to winning her second Grand slam of her career. However, she was shown the door in the semifinals of the French Open and Australian Open after losing to Iga Swiatek and Sabalenka, respectively. However, the American star currently has a great chance of winning her second career Grand Slam in Melbourne next year.
In this article, we will take a detailed look at the three main reasons the World No.3 will win the 2025 Australian Open over Sabalenka and Swiatek.
1) Coco Gauff is in top form at the moment
Gauff’s results in the entire summer preceding the US Open were underwhelming, but she did well to switch things up. She parted ways with Brad Gilbert and brought Matt Daly on board and there was an instant success. The 20-year-old was able to claim her second WTA 1000 title at the China Open.
She suffered only one loss from October to November and that came at the Wuhan Open against Sabalenka. But, she did well to bounce back at the WTA Finals in Riyadh, defeating Qinwen Zheng to win the title. In fact, during the tournament, she defeated Sabalenka and Swiatek en route to the final.
On the other hand, Sabalenka enjoyed the North American swing but, after that, won only one title in three months. For Swiatek, she failed to win any title in the second half of the season and also missed the entirety of the Asian swing due to her doping saga.
2) Coco Gauff’s undisputed hard court record
Gauff became the youngest WTA Finals champion in 20 years. But, it is worth noting that despite her poor run in some tournaments this season, the American earned 54 career-high win at the WTA level in a Calendar year. Majority of the victory was earned on the hard court, which included three titles she won on the surface.
Also, she’s yet to lose a hard court final in her career, with an extraordinary 8-0 record. Meanwhile, Sabalenka and Swiatek have won more titles on hard court than clay, yet no player since the Open Era has set the precedent that Gauff has done. The last time Gauff won a clay title was at the Emilia-Romagna Open in 2021.
3) Coco Gauff’s improvements in her game
Gauff has showed remarkable improvement in several aspects of her game in the past two months. Despite the deficiencies of the American star coming under scrutiny this season, her WTA Finals triumph was a testament to her poise transformation. In the WTA this year, Gauff is the only player to have played over 1000 rallies with 10 or more shots (1,211).
The player who comes next in the chart, surprisingly, is Jasmine Paolini, with 766 rallies. Also, this year, excluding Grand Slam events, Gauff has the second highest unforced errors 714. But, up to the China Open, Gauff’s percentage of points lost via unforced errors on the forehand side was 23.0%; since the tournament, it dropped to 21.3%. If this significant improvement continues next year, she might be unstoppable at the Australian Open.
