Nick Kyrgios is in Brisbane to kick-start his campaign for the 2025 season. As expected, Kyrgios had to answer journalists’ questions about his criticism of Jannik Sinner because of the doping controversy.

Kyrgios thinks two top players (Sinner and Iga Swiatek) testing positive for banned drugs is a ‘disgusting’ thing for tennis. He believes the doping cases have been handed ‘horrifically’ by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA).

Kyrgios also defended himself saying he gets emotional and throws tantrums but ‘it’s nothing compared to cheating and taking performance-enhancing drugs’. The 29-year-old is convinced that the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) appealed ITIA’s verdict because Sinner did something wrong.

He did fail two doping tests at separate times, as well. It wasn’t one after the other. They were a different time frame. So if you think that that’s the way that it got in his system…if that’s how you think it’s happened, then…But if he didn’t do anything wrong, why did they take his prize money and points (at Indian Wells) away? Obviously, they found something wrong with it.

Nick Kyrgios told reporters in Brisbane

Tennis community are eagerly waiting for Kyrgios versus Sinner match as the former has himself stated that he would do anything to beat the World No.1. Sinner tested positive for clostebol around the Indian Wells, while Swiatek had trimetazidine in her sample. Both escaped a harsh punishment, inviting criticism from all corners.

Nick Kyrgios blames the media for his bravado approach

Nick Kyrgios said he never changed his approach to playing tennis. But upon being asked about his display of bravado, Kyrgios blamed the media.

I think the media is to blame for me playing with such bravado. I’ve just played the same way since I was a junior and how I am now. I’ve played the same way. I guess they kind of created, like every time he steps out on the court, something could go. Where I’ve played years and years of tennis in my life, I’ve played normal matches.

Nick Kyrgios said at the press conference

The 2022 Wimbledon finalist, who last played at the 2023 Stuttgart Open, will also pair the up with Novak Djokovic in Brisbane. They are scheduled to clash with Alexander Erler and Andreas Mies on December 30. In singles, Kyrgios is set to lock horns with Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard on the same day.
