Khabib Nurmagomedov became one of the best fighters to ever compete in MMA with his impressive wrestling skills. One of Nurmagomedov’s biggest admirers is none other than Joe Rogan. After all, Rogan had the best seats to witness the greatness of the Russian fighter.

Comedian Dan Soder was a recent guest on Joe Rogan Experience. Nurmagomedov was a topic of discussion on the podcast episode. Both Soder and Rogan spoke very highly of Nurmagomedov. This is what Soder said about his feelings when he saw Nurmagomedov fight.

Khabib just did that to the top guys that could wrestle. Guys that could wrestle were like watching someone fight a shark and get brought into the water, and you were like, 'He's just got you.'

Rogan said Dustin Poirier also had the same thought after he fought Nurmagomedov at UFC 242. In that fight, Poirier had even caught Nurmagomedov in a guillotine choke, but the Russain easily escaped. Rogan explained to Soder how Nurmagomedov could escape from the choke with his amazing technique.

Rogan also talked about Nurmagomedov’s fight with Justin Gaethje at UFC 254, after which he retired. Rumors swirled of Nurmagomedov’s return at UFC 300. However, Nurmagomedov revealed that he has no interest and will never return to keep his promise to his mother.

Khabib Nurmagomedov retired from the sport mainly due to his father’s untimely death, who was also his head coach. Nurmagomedov’s mother did not want her son to fight inside the octagon without her husband by his side. Therefore, Nurmagomedov chose to honor his mother’s wish. Nonetheless, Nurmagomedov is still active as a coach for his compatriots in Dagestan.

Many, including UFC CEO Dana White, tried to bring Nurmagomedov out of retirement but failed. Joe Rogan spoke of the retirement on his recent podcast episode that featured Dan Soder. Rogan even called it a tragedy that Nurmagomedov retired early. However, he also stated that what Nurmagomedov did for his mother was beautiful.

Rogan also mentioned the late Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov, the father of Khabib, as one of the best MMA coaches ever. Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov planned to make Islam Makhachev a champion after his son. His plan materialized posthumously as Makhachev became champion at UFC 280. Makhachev showered immense praise and gratitude on his late coach after he won the title in Abu Dhabi.
