Nikola Jokic sets eyes on Russell Westbrook's record

In a recent post-game locker room interview, Nikola Jokic showered his teammate Russell Westbrook with praise for his triple-double legacy. Despite the loss against the Cavaliers, Denver Nuggets’ Serbian superstar center Jokic scored another triple-double, bringing his career total to 139. He registered 27 points, 20 rebounds, and 11 assists that night.

After the game, Nikola Jokic was congratulated by reporters on his monumental accomplishment of becoming the third all-time triple-double leader, surpassing Magic Johnson, who now sits at fourth, with LeBron James right behind him with 118 triple-doubles.

I really didn’t think about it, but…definitely, some kind of legacy.

The goal is to beat one of my teammates now. Russ, he is the King (of triple-doubles) right now. So, I will need a lot of years, if I ever do it, actually. So that’s the goal.

Nikola Jokic said about Russell Westbrook

Sitting at the top with a total of 200 triple-doubles, Russell Westbrook is the all-time leader in triple-doubles in the league. Heading into his 17th NBA season, Westbrook already has one triple-double coming off the bench against the Grizzlies.

Meanwhile, Jokic is leading the league this season in numerous stats, including 9 triple-doubles so far. Despite missing three games this year due to the birth of his son, he is averaging nearly 30 points per game with 13 rebounds and 10 assists.

Nobody in the realm of basketball would be surprised if Jokic actually surpassed his teammate Westbrook in the coming years. Considering the difference in court time, shots made, and the age gap between the two, the odds of becoming the all-time triple-double leader are in Jokic’s favor.

Russell Westbrook stands firm on his throne when questioned about Nikola Jokic surpassing him

Last year, Russell Westbrook made it clear that he doesnā€™t see Nikola Jokic surpassing his triple-double record anytime soon. When asked about the possibility, Westbrook had a confident reply.

Ain’t nobody like me. Nikola is a hell of a player, but he is not me.

Russell Westbrook said

Playing for the Clippers at the time, after a close battle with the Nuggets and a narrow escape of 102-100, Westbrook gave his flowers to the Serbian Joker.

He is a tough guard, an excellent passer, competes every single night, but tonight we got the best of him.

Russell Westbrook added

Referring to himself as the triple-double monster, he gave props to the then two-time MVP Nikola Jokic, applauding his high IQ and abilities as a player, and commending Jokic’s court awareness and pace.
